At DDRC, we believe every child deserves the opportunity to thrive, learn, and connect with their world. For many children with intellectual and developmental disabilities, this journey includes navigating unique challenges related to their behavioral health and social-emotional development. We understand that these needs are as diverse as the children themselves, and that’s why DDRC is committed to providing compassionate, comprehensive behavioral health services for kids right here in Colorado.

Our approach is designed not just to address specific behaviors but to foster overall well-being, promote independence, and empower families to support their child’s growth. We’re here to walk alongside you, offering specialized support tailored to your child’s unique path.

Why Are Specialized Behavioral Health Services for Kids So Important?

For children with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), effective behavioral health services for kids are more than just interventions; they are vital pathways to a more fulfilling life. These specialized services address the intricate connection between development, behavior, and emotional well-being, which can be particularly complex for children with IDD.

Unlocking Potential and Independence

When children gain tools to manage challenging behaviors, communicate more effectively, and regulate their emotions, a world of possibilities opens up. Behavioral health support helps children develop crucial life skills, improve focus, and learn adaptive strategies, empowering them to participate more actively in their homes, schools, and communities. This foundational support can lead to greater independence and self-reliance as they grow.

Enhancing Family Life and Reducing Stress

Parenting a child with behavioral complexities can be incredibly rewarding but also demanding. Our behavioral health services for kids extend support to the entire family. By providing caregivers with practical strategies, training, and understanding, we help to reduce family stress and create a more harmonious home environment. Improved communication and shared tools mean families can better support their child’s progress outside of therapy sessions.

Fostering Positive Social and Emotional Development

A key component of well-being is the ability to connect with others and navigate social situations. Our services help children with IDD develop essential social skills, understand social cues, and build meaningful relationships. By supporting social-emotional development for children with disabilities, we help them express their feelings in healthy ways, build self-confidence, and truly feel a sense of belonging.

DDRC’s Comprehensive Approach to Youth Behavioral Health

At DDRC, we pride ourselves on offering evidence-based, individualized youth behavioral health programs designed to meet children where they are. Our goal is to provide effective interventions that lead to lasting positive change.

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) Therapy for Children

As a core offering, Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy for children is a scientifically validated approach that focuses on understanding and improving behaviors. At DDRC, our ABA programs help children develop new skills, such as communication, social interaction, and daily living skills, while also addressing challenging behaviors. We provide these services for children through age 20, often utilizing Colorado’s Health First (Medicaid) Early and Periodic Screening, Diagnostic and Treatment (EPSDT) benefit, making critical support accessible to many families. Our therapy combines individualized one-on-one instruction with engaging, play-based group sessions, creating a nurturing and effective learning environment.

Personalized Assessment and Intervention Plans

Every child is unique, and so is their path to growth. Our process begins with thorough behavioral assessments to understand each child’s specific needs, strengths, and challenges. Based on this, our expert team develops personalized intervention plans that are tailored to the child’s individual goals and the family’s priorities. These plans are dynamic, evolving as the child progresses, ensuring the most effective and relevant support at every stage.

Our Philosophy: Person-Centered Care and Collaborative Family Partnerships

The cornerstone of DDRC’s behavioral health services for kids is our deep commitment to person-centered care. We believe that effective support happens with the child and family, not just to them.

Child-Focused, Strengths-Based Approach

We focus on the whole child, building upon their existing strengths and interests to drive engagement and success. Our therapists create a positive and encouraging environment where children feel understood and empowered to learn. This strengths-based perspective helps foster confidence and a love for learning.

Empowering Parents and Caregivers

Parents are their child’s first and most important teachers. That’s why family support for behavioral challenges is central to our model. We work hand-in-hand with parents and caregivers, providing education, training, and practical strategies they can implement at home. This collaborative partnership ensures consistency across environments and empowers families to be effective advocates and facilitators of their child’s ongoing development.

At DDRC, we believe every adult deserves opportunities to thrive, belong, and contribute meaningfully to their community, regardless of ability. These programs for adults give individuals with IDD customized supports that empower them to build real-life skills, form connections, and ultimately pursue fulfilling lives.

In this guide, we’ll explore what programs for adults are, who they serve, the types of programs available, and how individuals and families can find the best options right here in Colorado.

What Are Programs for Adults and Who Are They For?

Adult programs are comprehensive supports and services designed for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities who are 18 years or older. These programs help bridge the transition from adolescence to adulthood by providing opportunities for continued education, skill development, employment, social connection, recreation, and independent living. The ultimate goal is to foster independence while ensuring that individuals receive the necessary support to thrive physically, emotionally, and socially.

These programs are designed for a wide range of adults with varying levels of need. Some participants may require full-time, hands-on support, while others may benefit from occasional guidance as they live more independently. Families often seek adult programs to ensure their loved ones have structure, purpose, and community engagement as they mature.

At DDRC, we understand that no two journeys are the same. Each individual comes to us with unique strengths, aspirations, and challenges. Thus, we tailor our adult life programs to meet each person exactly where they are.

6 Types of Programs for Adults with IDD

A variety of adult programs exist to meet the diverse needs of individuals with IDD. Below, we break down several key types of programs, how they function, and how they can help individuals thrive in adulthood.

1. Day Programs

Day programs offer a variety of activities that promote personal growth, skill-building, social interaction, and recreation through a mix of site-based and community activities, helping individuals live fulfilling, engaged lives. For many individuals, day programs serve as a safe and engaging place to spend their day while their family members or caregivers are at work.

In day programs for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities in the Denver metro area , participants might engage in art, music, cooking, exercise, volunteer projects, and more—all designed to develop social, cognitive, and physical skills. These programs also help build routines and foster friendships with peers. At DDRC, our day programs are thoughtfully curated to nurture self-expression and confidence while helping individuals develop lifelong interests.

2. Employment Support

Many adults with IDD want to find themselves in a job that feels empowering and meaningful to them. Employment support offers skills development, job coaching,  interview preparation, and supported employment opportunities. These programs help individuals build confidence, earn income, and contribute to their community in a way that matters to them most.

With the right support, individuals can discover their strengths and interests, whether in retail, food service, office work, or more specialized industries. DDRC’s employment services focus not only on securing a job but on providing long-term support so individuals can succeed and grow in their chosen field.

3. Independent Living

Independent living assists adults with IDD in managing daily tasks and responsibilities that foster self-sufficiency. This can include skill development and training, benefits assistance, and managing money management, transportation, recreation, social engagement, self-advocacy, and connecting and navigating their community safely.

Our caring team of direct support professionals and family caregivers assists with these skills to not only build confidence and independence but also promote growth in everyday life.  At DDRC, we see the incredible pride that comes with mastering these skills, no matter how big or small. The ability to live as independently as possible greatly enhances quality of life.

4. Residential Services

For individuals who need more comprehensive support with daily living, residential services provide the right balance of support and independence, so every person can feel at home and build the life they deserve. Whether that is living independently, with a family caregiver, in a host home or in a group setting where trained direct support professionals are available to help with personal care, medication management, and household responsibilities.

The goal of residential services is to create safe, supportive living environments that still foster independence and personal growth. DDRC partners with families and individuals to ensure that residential services reflect personal preferences, community involvement, and individual dignity.

5. Recreational and Social Programs

Social connection plays a critical role in emotional well-being. Recreational and social programs give adults with IDD the chance to engage with peers, explore hobbies, and enjoy leisure activities that enrich their lives. These might include community outings, sports leagues, dances, clubs, or arts programs.

For many participants, these programs become a cherished part of their routine, offering both fun and important opportunities to practice social skills. DDRC values these programs not only for their joyful nature but for the lifelong friendships and confidence they help foster.

6. Behavioral Health Services

Some individuals may benefit from additional behavioral health services, including behavioral health interventions, including adult and youth ABA therapy, psychiatric services, and caregiver training.  These services address specific challenges while supporting emotional regulation, communication, and overall well-being.

At DDRC, we work closely with community agencies and families to integrate these therapeutic supports into each individual’s larger life plan, ensuring that challenges are addressed with compassion and expertise.

  • Building Inclusive Communities: Events like our Island Smash Pickleball Tournament and our participation in Behavioral Health Community Conversations actively break down barriers, promoting understanding and creating spaces where people with disabilities are valued and included. Our Therapeutic Recreation (from the website) and Day Programs also offer enriching opportunities for social connection and skill-building.
  • Ensuring Quality Care: By prioritizing DDRC staff training through programs like the NADSP E-Badge Academy, we ensure that our Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) provide the highest standard of person-centered care, respecting the dignity and choices of those we serve.
  • Advocating for Rights and Awareness: By highlighting documentaries like “The Ride Ahead” and participating in broader discussions, we raise disability awareness and advocate for the rights enshrined in the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), working towards a society where all individuals are respected and have equal opportunities.
  • Funding Essential Services: Our fundraising events, like “Rockin’ the Fairways,” are crucial. They directly fund the diverse array of DDRC services that empower individuals, families, and our wider community. Every dollar helps ensure that essential support for individuals with developmental disabilities is available to those who need it most in Colorado.
