DDRC July Community News: A Summer of Curiosity and Connection
We hope you had a wonderful Fourth of July. As we reflect on the ideals our country was founded upon, let’s remember that life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness mean ensuring that people with intellectual and developmental disabilities are fully included in every aspect of community life, with the freedom, support, and opportunity to make their own choices and pursue their own aspirations.
This month, we’re highlighting one of DDRC’s day programs for adults with disabilities, cheering on our Unified Softball Team, and looking ahead to a busy summer of community events across Jefferson County.
Celebrating Independence and Inclusion This July
Summer at DDRC is full of energy, from new hands-on learning opportunities in our day programs for adults with disabilities to community events that bring people together across Jefferson County. This month’s newsletter highlights that spirit, along with a look ahead at everything coming up in August and September.
Curiosity in Action: A New Science Lab at Walters Day Program
There’s something special about science: the sense of wonder, the thrill of discovery, and the pride that comes from making something work. At DDRC’s Walters Day Program, those moments are happening every week in a brand-new science and engineering lab designed with participants’ interests at its core. Created in response to participant feedback, ideas, and aspirations, the lab is believed to be among the first of its kind in the region. Today, it’s a vibrant space stocked with materials for chemistry, biology, robotics, and more, where curiosity leads the way.
Hands-On Discovery Through Microscopy and Experiments
Regular participants Greg, Wayne, Peter, and Kira gather each week to experiment, build, and discover. Kira has found a passion for microscopy, carefully examining strands of hair and delicate plant samples gathered from the garden just outside the lab door, revealing details of nature often overlooked. The group has explored science kits and fingerprinting activities, among other experiments that help them build an appreciation for how science shows up in everyday life.
Building Skills One Project at a Time: The Robotic Dune Buggy
For Greg, Wayne, and Peter, the excitement comes from building. Starting with intricate wooden models, the group went on to tackle a more ambitious project: assembling a robotic “dune buggy.” Over two months, they worked together to sort nearly 400 pieces, interpret detailed instructions and diagrams, and bring the buggy to life. Now, with the build complete, they’re setting their sights on programming the buggy to move and looking ahead to their next challenge: a robotic crane.
What stands out is not just what’s being built or explored, but who is doing it. Given the opportunity, individuals are diving into hands-on science and engineering in collaborative ways, demonstrating enthusiasm and skill at every step, while expanding expectations and quietly challenging what’s possible.
A Day Program Manager’s Perspective
Chris Hansen, Day Program Manager at Walters, shares that excitement as he works closely with the group each week. He says he’s proud of the unique space the team has created, and that it’s rewarding to see how much everyone enjoys it and how engaged they are.

Play Ball for Inclusion: DDRC’s Unified Softball Team Takes the Field
Summer in Colorado means sunshine, community, and the timeless joy of playing ball. It’s the season to root for the home team, with evenings spent outdoors soaking in the excitement.
This July and early August, DDRC’s Therapeutic Recreation program invites you to be part of something truly special. Our Unified Softball Team will be playing Friday evenings at Lakewood Park (6th Ave & Kipling) starting at 6:30 or 7:30 p.m., and we’d love to see the stands filled with friendly faces and enthusiastic fans.
While softball brings the fun of summer alive, this team represents something even more meaningful: inclusion, connection, and opportunity. DDRC’s Unified team brings together athletes of all abilities playing side by side, supporting one another, and building genuine friendships. Adult Unified Sports are designed to create real teamwork and shared experiences. Each Unified team includes athletes with intellectual and developmental disabilities playing alongside teammates without disabilities. Every player is welcomed, valued, and celebrated.
So come cheer loud and proud. Let’s root for more than just runs and wins let’s root for inclusion, friendship, and a community where everyone has a place on the team. See you at the ballpark!

Jeffco Back-to-School Bash Returns August 8
Jeffco families, be sure to mark your calendars for an exciting event: the annual Jeffco Schools Back-to-School Bash on Saturday, August 8, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Jeffco Stadium (500 Kipling St., Lakewood).
Hosted by Jefferson County Schools and the Jeffco Schools Foundation, this free, family-friendly celebration offers a fun and welcoming way to gear up for the 2026 to 2027 school year. Representatives from Jeffco Schools, local businesses, nonprofits, and student clubs will be on hand. Attendees can enjoy music, entertainment, games, treats, and giveaways while exploring a wide range of information booths. DDRC will be there with a booth too.

Enjoy this free event with great BBQ, networking, and meaningful discussions on issues affecting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, mental health challenges, older adults, families, and households with modest means across Jefferson County.
