DDRC March Community News: Celebrating IDD Awareness Day and Community Connections
March is a meaningful time for our community as we celebrate IDD Awareness Day and recognize the people, programs, and partnerships that make inclusion possible. In this month’s DDRC community news, we’re highlighting advocacy at the Capitol, the impact of therapeutic recreation, opportunities through family support services, and upcoming events designed to connect and support individuals and families across our community.
IDD Awareness Day at the Colorado State Capitol
March 3 is Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Awareness Day, hosted by Alliance Colorado in partnership with The Arc of Colorado and JFK Partners. This annual event celebrates progress and promotes inclusion for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities while bringing advocates, professionals, and community members together at the Colorado State Capitol.
The day features morning activities at the Capitol, including the Pledge of Alliance led by an individual with IDD, as well as an IDD Awareness Day Tribute. During the sold-out luncheon, awards are presented to recognize excellence in advocacy and service across the community.
Recognizing Leaders and Advocates
IDD Awareness Day is an important reminder that lasting change happens when people come together to elevate voices, celebrate progress, and build stronger communities. Events like this shine a light on the dedication of advocates, providers, self-advocates, and families who help create more inclusive opportunities for people with IDD across Colorado.
Rick Lovato Honored for Leadership in Therapeutic Recreation

DDRC is proud to recognize Rick Lovato of Therapeutic Recreation as a finalist for the 2026 IDD Awareness Day Direct Support Professional of the Year Award. For more than 35 years, Rick has supported individuals with IDD through inclusive athletic programs that help participants experience success, pride, confidence, and meaningful connection. DDRC also celebrates Ryan Monroe of Adult Vocational Services, who was nominated for DSP of the Year for his creative, community-based programming and leadership.
Therapeutic Recreation Creates Meaningful Community Experiences
At DDRC, we know that recreation can open doors to confidence, friendships, and lifelong memories. Our therapeutic recreation services for people with disabilities create opportunities for individuals to build skills, connect with others, and experience the joy of participating fully in community life.
Special Olympics Ski Program Highlights
This month’s newsletter also celebrates the deep loyalty and generosity that support DDRC athletes in the Special Olympics State Ski Program. The story of Greg, a longtime supporter with roots in Jeffco schools, reflects the kind of enduring connection that helps make these experiences possible. His recent support for lodging costs helped DDRC athletes attend the Special Olympics Winter Games at Copper Mountain from February 27 through March 1, giving them the chance to compete, bond as a team, and enjoy the full experience of the event.
Safety and Support on the Slopes
Safety and teamwork were also on display during a DDRC ski training trip to Copper Mountain when Therapeutic Recreation team members Jack and Jordan responded calmly to a flat tire on I-70 while transporting participants. Their quick thinking, clear communication, and focus on participant safety turned a stressful situation into a powerful example of professionalism and teamwork. Support from DDRC fleet maintenance helped ensure everyone returned safely.
Supporting Families Through DDRC Family Support Services
Families connected to the Family Support Services Program are invited to a community gathering on Saturday, March 14, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds, Green Mountain Conference Rooms A&B, 15200 W. 6th Ave., Golden, CO 80401. This event is designed to inform, connect, and support participants and their loved ones. Current and former FSSP members, their families, and community partners are encouraged to attend. Organizers will share details about services, guide families through the enrollment process, and help expand awareness of family-centered supports. Lunch will be provided.
Upcoming Family Support Services Events

Families are reminded that the deadline to submit FSSP requests is May 15, 2026. For those planning to attend the March 14 gathering, be sure to RSVP and connect with other families and community partners. The event is organized by the Jefferson County Case Management Agency and offers a valuable opportunity to learn more about available supports.
Friday Night Respite: Support for Families and Caregivers
A big thank-you goes out to the families who joined DDRC for the recent respite Open House. It was a wonderful opportunity to connect and introduce the new Friday Night Respite Program, held from 4:00 p.m.–7:00 p.m. at the Weiland Center near Kipling and Hampden.
Families with children ages 4–17 on the CES Waiver who are looking for a well-deserved break may still have an opportunity to participate. To learn more or request an application, email Eric.
Out in the Community: Connecting Through Events and Partnerships
March also brings another opportunity to celebrate inclusion through spring into awareness. On Thursday, March 19, from 5:00–7:00 p.m., DDRC will co-host this annual event with Fairfield Inn & Suites Denver West and the West Metro Chamber. The gathering honors IDD Awareness Month and welcomes local businesses, organizations, and community members for an evening focused on inclusion, connection, and community.
In February, DDRC also participated in several outreach events, including the Lakewood Rise PossAbilities Expo and the West Metro Chamber Women in Business meeting. These moments of connection help us share how DDRC supports individuals and families in living their best lives. If your group is hosting a resource fair or offers an opportunity to highlight DDRC’s impact, please contact Michele.
We also want to extend our gratitude to Jean Armour for more than 20 years of dedicated service on the DDRC Board of Directors. Her leadership, insight, and countless volunteer hours strengthened our mission and supported families across the community.
Planning for the Future: Transition Resources for Students
DDRC will be participating in an upcoming open house for Denver Public Schools students and families involved in the special education Transitions Program. This event is a great opportunity for students and families to explore programs and services that support the transition into adult life.
DPS Transitions Open House

The open house will take place on Thursday, March 26, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at North High School, 2960 Speer Blvd, Denver, CO 80211. DDRC staff will be there to share information about the many programs and services available to help students and families plan for the future.
