Everything You Need to Know About IDD Services in Colorado

Navigating the world of intellectual and developmental disability (IDD) services can feel overwhelming—especially if you’re doing it for the first time. Whether you’re a parent seeking support for a young child, an adult looking for opportunities to live more independently, or a caregiver hoping to provide the best resources for a loved one, it’s important to know you’re not alone. At DDRC, we’ve been helping individuals and families access IDD services in Colorado for decades. Our goal is to make the process clear, supportive, and empowering from the very beginning.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through what IDD services are, why they matter so much, and how to begin the process of getting the services you or your loved one need. With the right information and support, getting started is easier than you might think.

What are IDD Services?

IDD services are supports and programs designed to assist people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in living full, self-directed lives. These services can include everything from early intervention and residential programs to job coaching, adult day programs, behavioral health, and case management. With IDD services, the goal is to provide tools and resources that promote independence, community inclusion, and personal growth.

In Colorado, these services are coordinated through Case Management Agencies (CMAs) and then provided by agencies, like DDRC. Each person’s needs are unique, which means the combination of services they receive is tailored to their specific goals, challenges, and stage of life. At DDRC, we take a person-centered approach, because we are firm believers that individuals who need IDD services thrive when their service plans are tailored to them.

Why are IDD Services So Important?

IDD services are important because of one key thing: they help create a strong foundation for lifelong success, dignity, and inclusion. People with intellectual and developmental disabilities often face barriers in areas such as education, employment, and housing. IDD services help break down those barriers by offering direct support, skill development, and advocacy.

When someone has access to the right resources, they’re more likely to reach their personal goals, participate in their community, and experience a higher quality of life. For families and caregivers, these IDD services also offer relief and peace of mind, knowing that their loved one is supported by professionals who truly understand their needs.

At DDRC, we’ve seen firsthand how these services can change lives. Whether it’s a young child reaching new developmental milestones through Early Intervention services or an adult finding purpose through a job training program, these services are essential to building a more inclusive and compassionate society.

5 Steps on How to Get IDD Services in Your Area

If you’re looking to access IDD Waiver support in Colorado, there is a specific process you will need to navigate before accessing DDRC’s wide array of services. You will need to work with your local Case Management Agency (CMA) to guide you through the steps. DDRC can direct you to the right place to get things started. Here’s how the process typically works:

1. Understand Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for IDD Waiver services in Colorado, an individual must meet several requirements. While DDRC is no longer a CMA, their staff can direct you to the right place to get started. CMAs are regional organizations authorized by the state to determine eligibility and coordinate services for people with IDD. The CMA can assist you to determine if you are eligible for waiver or other services.  What CMA you need to work with depends on what county you live in.

2. Start the Intake Process

Once you’ve connected with your local CMA, they will assist you with the intake process and guide you through the process.   This process helps determine whether the individual meets the eligibility criteria for IDD services and helps identify what kind of support might be needed.

3. Apply for Medicaid (if applicable)

Many IDD services in Colorado are funded through Medicaid waivers. If the individual isn’t already enrolled in Medicaid, applying is a critical step. There are several IDD waivers available depending on the individual’s age and needs, such as the Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) Waiver, Supported Living Services (SLS) Waiver and the Children’s Extensive Services Waiver (CES).

4. Create a Service Plan

Once eligibility and funding are established, a case manager at the CMA will work with the individual and their support team to develop a personalized service plan. This plan outlines goals, preferences, and the specific services that will be provided. It’s a collaborative process, and it’s always centered on the individual’s voice and vision for their life.

5. Begin Services and Stay Connected

With the service plan in place, support can begin. These may include residential services, in-home support, job coaching, or community connection, day program  activities, to name just a few. DDRC provides a myriad of services and supports to create opportunities for individuals to live their best life. Let DDRC help you.
