DDRC’s science and technology activities give adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities the chance to explore, build, experiment, and discover, with trained support and a program designed around what each participant can do.
Hands-On Learning, Built for Everyone
DDRC’s science and technology lab at the Walters Day Program is believed to be one of the first of its kind among adult day programs in the region. In fact, most day programs don’t even have a dedicated lab for participants to use. We built this one because we think adults with IDD deserve access to the same kind of hands-on discovery that everyone else does.
A Science and Technology Lab Built for Inclusion
Having fun with science and technology should not be reserved for any particular group of people, and DDRC’s lab was built with that in mind.
Our accessible activities span four areas of exploration:
Chemistry
Participants conduct simple and engaging chemistry experiments, exploring reactions, materials, and the science behind everyday phenomena.
Biology
From studying specimens up close to observing living systems, biology activities bring the natural world into focus.
Microscopy
Using real microscopes, participants examine the details of nature that the naked eye misses entirely, from plant cells to tiny organisms.
Robotics
Participants build and program robots so they can develop problem-solving skills and engineer confidence along the way.

What Our Science and Technology Activities Can Look Like
Our day programs can vary. But overall, our hands-on science and technology activities are designed to spark curiosity through simple experiments, interactive projects, and creative problem-solving. The lab is structured to be accessible and engaging for participants across a wide range of abilities and interests.
A typical session might include:
- Building and testing a robotics project over several sessions
- Conducting a chemistry experiment and observing how materials change
- Examining specimens under a microscope and recording observations
- Exploring biology concepts through guided, hands-on activities
- Collaborating with other participants on a group STEM challenge
No prior science or technology experience is needed. Our DDRC team guides each activity with clear instruction and individualized support, so every participant can engage at their own level.

Science and technology activities are one part of what makes DDRC’s on-site day programming distinctive.
